Harold Lloyd, a major American comedy star of the Silent Movie Era, is world-famous for his football comedy Classic, The Freshman, released in 1925, less than a year before the Historic Riviera Theatre in North Tonawanda, NY opened. Lloyd's granddaughter, Suzanne Lloyd will introduce the film when it is presented with live organ accompaniment by Kevin Saky at 8PM, Saturday, April 19, 2008 on a double bill with "Why Worry?" a 1923 Lloyd comedy.
The story of a nerdy college freshman (Lloyd) who will do anything to become popular and ends up as an inept player in the middle of a chaotic and hilarious football game. It is considered by many to be Lloyd's funniest movie and is on the AFI list of the 100 funniest films ever made.Directed by Fred C. Newmeyer and Sam Taylor, the film stars Harold Lloyd and Jobyna Ralston.
Sport fans and comedy fans alike, will love this film.
The film was released by Pathe, a French company which had one of its earliest offices in the United States circa 1914 on Franklin Street in Buffalo, NY.
Years later, in 1947, Preston Sturges and Lloyd collaborated on "The Sin of Harold Diddlebock," a sequel about the same character.
The Harold Lloyd Comedy Classic Film Fest will run at the Historic Riviera Theatre, 67 Webster Street, N. Tonawanda, NY from Friday, April 18 - Sunday, April 20, 2008. 10 Seriously Funny Films will be shown in six completely different programs over the three days. All films will be presented with 35mm prints supplied by SONY Entertainment, "Pure White Carbon Arc Projection" on the Riviera's 35 foot Silver Screen and accompanied on the world-class Wurlitzer organ.
The festival is co-presented by: The Historic Riviera Theatre, The Buffalo Film Festival, The Buffalo Film Society, George Eastman House, WKBW Channel 7, Off-Beat Cinema and the New York State Movie Theatre Corridor.
