1950s Carbon Arc Projector
What is CARBON ARC?
Electricity is run through two copper sheathed rods made of pure carbon, a positive and negative.
The electricity "arcs" between the positive and negative carbon producing an extremely bright, pure white ball of "flame."
This Pure White Light is used to project the motion picture image onto the screen. It is full-spectrum white light.
Modern projectors use a special Xenon light bulb. Xenon is NOT pure white: it is yellowish and does not make movies look as beautiful as they are meant to be.
Carbon Arc projectors require more maintainence and skill to run than other modern projectors, but the effort is worth it!
This fund helps to purchase the carbon rods (which can cost several thousand dollars a year) and to keep the projectors in good running order.
