More than two hundred people from Buffalo, Erie County and Western New York have helped to make Hollywood the movie capital of the world!
The "Movies" as we know them were "invented" by Thomas Alva Edison in 1894. As early as 1897, Edison came to Buffalo, New York and filmed the city! These films are among the first and most important motion pictures made anywhere in the world.
There is some excellent evidence that two brothers named Mitchell and Moe Mark (born and raised in Buffalo, New York) were the moving force behind the establishment of two of Hollywood's biggest movie studios! They opened what may have been the first true movie theater in Buffalo, the Vitascope Theater in 1896 and later The Automatic Vaudeville Company (1901-02). It was there that they met Adolph Zukor and Marcus Loew who went on to found Paramount Pictures and MGM. In fact, the Automatic Vaudeville Company in New York City -- perhaps the first important movie "chain" theater in 1903 -- was named after the Mark's original Buffalo Movie Theater!
This is an ever growing list of the Movie Stars, Directors, Producers, Screenwriters, Cinematographers, Costume Designers, Composers and skilled technicians who built Hollywood and continue to make American Movies great!
Great movies like The Natural were shot IN or near Buffalo. Other movies are about Buffalo.
