Buffalo, NY / New York City, NY Buffalo International Film Festival will co-present with TIPA (Toward International Peace through the Arts) a free, public, lunchtime program on Tuesday, October 28, 2008 from 12:30-2PM. Tony Award Winning Broadway Stars Marian Seldes, Eli Wallach, Frances Sternhagen, and Tammy Grimes with Betsy von Furstenberg, Bess Rous, John Major, and Ted Widmer, Editor, "American Speeches," will read classic examples of American oratory pertinent to the issues at stake in the upcoming history-making American presidential election and in memory of beloved NBC "Meet the Press" host Tim Russert. The program will also include the reading of tributes to Tim Russert by Brian Williams, Senator Charles Schumer, and others. The program at St. Peter's Church at Citicorp Center (Lexington Avenue at 54th Street) is Free and open to the public. Doors open at noon.
Mr. Tannen, The TIPA Project founder, said " I have always felt that tributes to public figures should be free and open to the public, because these figures belong to all of us. Election Day 2008 will belong to the candidates: This program belongs to the memory of Tim Russert."
The TIPA Project and its founder Stanley E. Tannen have been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. This year celebrates Mr. Tannen's 37 years as a peace advocate and activist dedicated to promoting the Humanites: Literature and the Arts as an instrument for peace.
Buffalo International Film Festival is pleased to cooperate with this event both as a tribute to Buffalo's Tim Russert and also as an international outreach of the diverse cultural and artistic communities of the Western New York region. Edward Summer, President of BIFF comments that "We salute the work of Mr. Tannen which resulted in his Nobel Peace Prize nomination." He notes, also, that Buffalo's Dr. Herbert Hauptman, a Nobel Prize winner, is on the Board of Advisors for The Buffalo Film Festival.
The mission of TIPA is to celebrate and honor the literary, artistic, and cultural heritage of the nations of the world as a powerful tool for Humanity, Peace, Understanding, and Reconciliation. This program is part of The TIPA Project's ongoing series of free readings and performances of great literature, poetry, music, and drama featuring Academy Award, Tony Award, and Pulitzer Prize winners and other internationally renowned actors, writers, and musicians. Programs for the 2007-2008 season will focus on great poetry and short fiction from around the world.
Among the many previous participants at TIPA programs have been: Kathy Bates, Cherry Jones, Arthur Miller, Marcia Gay Harden, Brian F. O'Byrne, Philip Seymour Hoffman (star of "The Savages," filmed in Buffalo, NY), and Norman Mailer.
