The Buffalo International Film Festival is pleased to co-present: Hollywood 1939: The Brightest Stars and Biggest Films of Hollywood's Greatest Year
Wizard of OZ leads off series
Wizard of OZ: Thursday, June 26, 2008, 7:30 PM
A sparkling new 35mm color print re-mastered from the Technicolor
negatives will kick off this important series of 1939 motion picture
classics.
Uniquely
equipped as an authentic 1939 motion picture theater, the Historic
Riviera of Western New York retains its 35 foot silver screen and it's
genuine carbon-arc projectors which provide the purest form of white
light for exhibiting the 9 classics programmed for the summer film
series.
Nearly a failure in 1939, The Wizard of OZ has gone on to become an
American Classic especially beloved in Western New York because of the
Academy Award won by Harold Arlen, a Buffalo native.
The film
premiered on 12 August 1939 (Oconomowoc, Wisconsin Premiere) and went
on to win Academy Awards one for best score, the other for best song
(Over The Rainbow). It was nominated for Best Picture, Best
Cinematography, Best Art Direction, and Best Special Effects and it is
one of the most sumptuous of the studio-style Technicolor spectaculars.
Modern prints actually show more of the color and detail than the
original 1939 prints because of improvements in laboratory processes.
Yet few have seen this gorgeous bouquet of Hollywood Technicolor as
it was meant to be seen up on a huge screen. No television set or
BluRay DVD can do justice to the richness and detail of full-size
projection from a well-made 35mm film print. See it at the
not-too-big, not-too-small, but just-right 1200 seat Riviera Theatre
with a big bag of freshly popped PopCorn, sparkling SodaPop and fresh
candy. Judy Garland and Bert Lahr would be thrilled at how much you'll
enjoy yourself.
The sequel, Return to OZ was a dismal failure in the United States
despite its fidelity to the original L. Frank Baum novels. Only
Europeans and Asians approved of it's dark view of OZ.
Baum
himself was born in NY state, and W.W. Denslow, the original
illustrator, was a member of East Aurora's RoyCrofters community. He is
sometimes credited with designing the RoyCroft emblem which resembles
his signature in the OZ book.
Two rare 300dpi cast photos are attached along with photos of Baum, Denslow, and the movie poster.
