Charlie
Chaplin, Buster Keaton, and Harold Lloyd were the three great geniuses
of Silent Movie Comedy. Lloyd (1914-1971), now not as well known to
modern audiences as the others, was the most successful financially.
He
made nearly 200 hsyterically funny films between 1914 and 1947. His
spectacled, straw-hat character was an everyman who got out of scrapes.
His most famous film "Safety Last" (to be shown Sunday, April 20, 2008
at 7PM) contains the iconic image of Lloyd hanging high above city
streets from the hands of a clock.
Appearing
at the festival will be Suzanne Lloyd, Harold Llloyd's granddaughter!
She will bring rare memorabilia and introduce many of the films. She
will also be available at a private reception.
Dr.
Anthony Bannon, formerly of Buffalo and now director of the George
Eastman House, and Patrick Loughney, director of the GEH film
collection will also speak.
There
will be six programs with a total of ten Harold Lloyd classics. All
films will be shown from 35mm motion picture prints supplied by SONY
Entertainment.
The
Riviera Theatre is uniquely equipped with a 35 Silver Screen and the
original "pure-white" Carbon-Arc projectors recently saved from
destruction. This combination produces the mostly beautiful motion
picture projection possible. Few theatres in the United States have
this equipment.
The
Riviera also houses the one-of-a-kind Wurlitzer "Demonstration" organ
installed by the Wurlitzer company in 1926 to demonstrate their product
to potential buyers. Of the 2300 odd organs manufactured at the
Tonawanda plant, the Riviera organ is one of fewer than 30 organs in
their original state in their original location. The organ was just
completely cleaned and restored, making it one of the premiere organs
of its kind in the world.
The
Harold Lloyd Film Festival is co-presented by The Historic Riviera
Theatre, The Buffalo International Film Festival, and the Buffalo Film
Society.
