Buffalo Snow Myth Exposed

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Academy Award-Winning Composer David Shire Joins

Buffalo International Film Festival Advisory Board

BUFFALO, N.Y. – April 27, 2007 — The Buffalo International Film Festival (BIFF) announces the newest member of its board of advisors, Academy Award-Winning Composer David Shire.

David Shire has composed scores for more than 125 motion pictures and television shows in addition to songs and music for numerous plays. In 1980, Shire won an Oscar for Best Music shared with lyricist Norman Gimbel for the Best Original Song “It Goes Like It Goes” in "Norma Rae." His other major motion pictures scores include Alan J. Pakula’s “All the President’s Men,” Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Conversation” and most recently David Fincher’s “Zodiac.”

Born in Buffalo, NY, he has a new show at the Studio Arena Theater there: A Time For Love: Songs from a Marriage, a musical with Shire’s long-time theater collaborator lyricist/director Richard Maltby, Jr. The show began previews on April 20, 2007 and runs through May 13. For more information, visit www.studioarena.org. Shire has also done special classes at Nichols School in Buffalo.

Shire has a lifetime interest in science. He composed the score for “2010: The Year We Make Contact.” Shire will be involved with "How Science Works: The Film and Video Competition," another activity of BIFF.  He also worked with Walter Murch (another science buff) on "Return to Oz," the sequel to the film scored by Buffalo's Harold Arlen.

The Buffalo International Film Festival, Inc., a 501(c)(3) not for profit corporation in New York State, was established as a public charity and depends upon contributions from the public at large, corporations, foundations, government grants and other beneficiaries. The festival highlights the cultural, artistic and scientific contributions of Western New York and world cinema.
